Basic Information

Neunggasa, a thousand-year-old temple where you can feel the energy of Mt. Palyongsan.
The temple was founded by Ado Hwasang in 417 during the reign of King Nulji of Silla under the name 'Bohyeonsa Temple'. Unfortunately, it was all burned down during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, but it was rebuilt in 1644 by Great Master Byeokcheon and renamed as 'Neunggasa Temple.'

The Daeungjeon Hall is designated as Treasure No. 1307 and Dongjong is Treasure No. 1557. The statues of the four guardian kings are designated as Jeollanam-do Province Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 224.

The Bohyeonsa Temple was founded at the foot of Palyeongsan Mountain (it is said that Ado Hwasang once stayed here to preach).
The Bohyeonsa Temple's historical monument states that it later became Neunggasa Temple, but it is recorded as a different temple in the Code of Geography Class of Joseon Dynasty. It is unclear when Neunggasa Temple was founded, but it is said that it was burned down by the Japanese army during the Second Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1597.
In the 22nd year of King Injo's reign (1644), Great Master Jeonghyeon had a dream during the summer retreat (a 90-day period from mid-April to mid-July. Monks gathered in a room to pray).
In his dream, a divine monk appeared and said, "It is difficult to become a Buddha for a man. I shall become a great benefactor and spread the belief." In response, Great Master Jeonghyeon explored the mountain with Gwanheuisa. They found the site of an old temple on the south side of the mountain and built a temple, including a pavilion, dorms, Buddha statue, Buddhist painting, bell pavilion, and wooden fish. These were all taken from his dream.

Later, when Great Master Jeonghyeon passed away, his disciples Min-jeong, Eui-heon, Sang-gi, and others followed his lead and reorganized the temple by painting the dorm building. After several donations to the temple, the abbot Sumyeong felt sorry about the absence of a stele in Neunggasa, so he traveled a thousand miles to Oh Su-chae, the Tongjeongdaebu Bujehak of Hongmoongwan, and built a stele in Neunggasa in the 16th year of King Sukjong's reign (1690). The monument was built by Yeonghae Yaktan (影海若坦,1668~1754), a monk from Goheung.

The hermitages affiliated with Neunggasa Temple were Seobulam and Mankyungam. Seobul is the most important hermitage of Neunggasa Temple, which used to be called Seobulsaam (西不思議庵) and then Seobulam or Seoam (西庵). It was once located on the west side of Bohyeonsa Temple.

Seongjin, a disciple of Seol-am, asked Sin Gi-seon to write a record of the reconstruction of the Seobulam Hermitage at Neungga Temple in 1894. Mangyeongam is a hermitage where Byeogo and his disciples Seol-am, Uigwan, and Hyeongyeon stayed. It is said that Adohwasang resided here in the first year of King Nulji of Silla. It used to be called Bohyeonam, but it was renamed to Mangyeongam. This hermitage was also built by Byeocheonsa Jeong Hyeon, and was renovated four times in the 22nd year of King Injo’s reign (1664). In the 8th year of King Cheoljong's reign (1857), Zen master Giseongdang renovated it.
The hermitage Dangwoo was burnt in the spring of 1900 (Gyeongja), but Gyeonsong and Myeonghak returned it. It is said that one or two monks prayed and made donations, and three years later, in the winter of 1902 they finally opened the front of the main building and expanded it. In 1918, Mangyeongam was rebuilt and its monument was erected next to Daeungjeon. Iksun, a monk at Neunggasa Temple, was skilled in Brahman chanting, and he had many disciples.

The temple is also popular for temple stays, where you can spend a day in a mountain temple surrounded by cypress trees and heal your tired body and mind.
