Jeokdaebong, which rises like the back of a whale in the middle of Geumgang. At 592 meters above sea level, it is the second highest mountain in Goheung after Palyeongsan Mountain (608 meters). The mountain is gentle, so anyone can easily climb it. When you stand on the summit, you can see Wando to the west, Geomundo to the south, and the islands of Yeosu to the east at a glance, and if the weather is good, you can even see Jeju Island in the distance. If you reach the summit, take a look at the Jeokdaebong Beacon Station. At the summit of Jeokdae Peak, you can see the circular beacon mound, which is 34 meters in circumference and 7 meters in diameter, that has been used since ancient times to quickly communicate emergencies such as the invasion of Japanese invaders.
As you walk along the trail to the summit of Jeokdaebong, you will feel the breath of the ancestors who have protected Geogeumdo Island. When you reach the summit, take in the refreshing sea breeze and look out over every corner of Geogundo.
The summit of Jeokdaebong Peak has an excellent view, so it has played a major role as a beacon station since the Joseon Dynasty, and the circular beacon station of Jeokdae-bong Peak remains on the summit.
The foot of Jeokdae-bong is known as the site of Mokjangseong Fortress during the Joseon Dynasty. Geogundo, which was one of the affiliated pastures of Doyang pasture, is also known as a Senap pasture that built a long wall around Jeokdae-bong and raised 116 horses. There is no boring mountain in Goheung, and there are countless stories and things to see, but Jeokdaebong is a mountain that you must climb to the top. When you stand at the summit, you will understand why.
Unlike its wide-open mountainous terrain, Jeokdaebong Peak is a mountain with a great view. It faces Cheondeungsan Mountain and Mabok Mountain to the north and Jangheung Cheongwansan Mountain (723m) to the west, and the Jeokdaebong Beacon Fire Station, which is known as the only circular beacon fire station in South Korea, is about 34m in circumference and 7m in diameter, which is about the same size as the Namdaecheon Beacon Fire Station (Local Cultural Property No. 147) in Gyeongnam.
The foot of Jeokdae-bong is known as the site of Mokjangseong Fortress during the Joseon Dynasty. Trails that connect Seokjeong-ri and Eojeon-ri, which run north to south of Geogeumdo, still have traces of the Mokjangseong Fortress.
It is said that the area around Jeokdaebong was once covered in dense forests. Now, only the coastal windbreak forest is all that remains of the old landscape, but according to old documents, Geogundo Island was home to dunjeon (military agricultural colonies) and a forest owned by the government. It was famous for its abundance of high-quality trees, and wood cutting was prohibited to secure timber for ships.
Jeokdae-bong Peak is a mountain with a high peak, so there is a beacon station there to prepare for the invasion of Japanese pirates during the Joseon Dynasty. A circular beacon tower remains at the top, indicating that it was used as a military stronghold in the past. To enjoy a mountain hike without much difficulty, time and transportation must be well-coordinated. You can enjoy a refreshing day by taking a deep breath while stretching your arms wide open in the sea breeze of the unique blue sea.
The mountain trail that starts from Seongchi Village passes through the village and takes you to Pasanjae via a forest road. From here, you can go through this pass and reach Geumjang Village and Geumjang Beach. If you turn left at the top of the hill, you can start hiking in earnest.
Climb while enjoying the sea view spreading out beneath your feet as you look down at the sea. When you climb up to the ridge of the ridge, you will feel like you are in a movie as you run along the path between the thick silver grass.
In the fall, when the silver grass flowers bloom taller than a person's height, and you enjoy a hike with your loved ones while feeling the sea breeze, it will be a day you will never forget.
